Constable Care Incursion – Building Safe, Confident and Empowered Children

Sometimes, the most meaningful learning begins with a question, and for many of our children, that question was about safety, feelings and how to respond when something doesn’t feel right.

At Nido Early School Maylands, conversations with children and families revealed a growing curiosity around emotions, relationships and personal safety. Rather than providing answers, these conversations opened the door for deeper exploration. This led to a partnership with the Constable Care Foundation, bringing these important topics to life in a way that children could understand and connect with.

Our children from Classrooms 5, 6 and 7 participated in an experience that balanced storytelling, humour and important life messages. Through interactive puppet shows, children were introduced to concepts such as recognising feelings, understanding safe and unsafe situations and knowing how and when to seek help.

What made the experience powerful was how naturally children engaged. They laughed, participated and responded, while also processing complex ideas in a safe and supportive environment. The idea of having a “helping hand” of trusted adults resonated strongly, as did the message that their voice matters and should be heard.

The second part of the session shifted to practical safety, exploring everyday situations such as riding safely and navigating shared spaces. These lessons were not abstract; they were relevant, practical and immediately applicable to the children’s lives.

Reflecting on this experience, its impact extended beyond the day itself. Children demonstrated increased awareness, confidence and willingness to speak up. They were not only learning about safety – they were beginning to develop a sense of agency and self-belief.

This aligns closely with Learning Outcome 3, as children build a strong sense of wellbeing through understanding themselves, their boundaries and their ability to seek support. Moving forward, these learnings continue to be embedded into everyday practice, reinforcing the message that every child has the right to feel safe, supported and empowered.
