At Nido Early School Scarborough, learning extends beyond the classroom and into children’s homes, families and communities. That’s why Dea, the Nido Galah spends weekends visiting our children, giving them the opportunity to take on the important role of caregiver while creating meaningful memories with their families.
When children take Dea home, they become responsible for looking after her, including her in family experiences and sharing her adventures with their friends at Nido. Through this experience, children develop responsibility, empathy, confidence and a sense of belonging as they connect their home and school worlds.
This weekend, it was Claire’s turn to host Dea.
From the moment they arrived home, Claire took her role very seriously, organising a special tea party to formally introduce Dea to the family and all her friends at home.
The adventures quickly began. Claire treated Dea to a babycino before taking her along to the local library for story time. Together they explored books and enjoyed a morning of imagination and discovery.
One of the highlights of the weekend was Dea’s very first swimming lesson. Claire made sure she felt comfortable in the water, and Dea particularly enjoyed wearing goggles that matched her beautiful feathers.
With the weather keeping them indoors, Claire decided to show Dea a completely different world. Knowing that galahs spend most of their time high in the sky, she took Dea on an underwater adventure to The Aquarium of Western Australia where she was fascinated by the colourful fish and marine life.
Dea joined Claire on many other outings throughout the weekend too, including walks and visits to the local park where Dea got to say hi to many of her own feathery friends.
By the end of her stay, Dea had enjoyed a weekend full of friendship, curiosity and care. Most importantly, Claire showed wonderful responsibility and kindness in looking after her special visitor, creating memories that she was able to share with her many friends back at Nido Scarborough.
