Celebrating NAIDOC Week at Nido Early School

During NAIDOC Week, Nido Early Schools have come together to celebrate and honour the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This week has been filled with vibrant activities and educational experiences designed to promote cultural understanding and appreciation among children.

At Nido Harrisdale, children have embraced creativity using natural materials like gum leaves to paint with the traditional colours of the Indigenous flag. These art projects, including mark-making activities, have provided a tactile and visual connection to Aboriginal culture.

At Nido Prahran, the story “The Awesome Emu” by Gregg Dreise captivated the children’s imaginations. Educators brought the tale to life through engaging light and shadow play, enhancing the storytelling experience.

Nido Treeby South, Balcatta, and Belair have set up learning provocations that promote cultural understanding, respect, and appreciation. These activities have encouraged children to explore and value the rich heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Nido Riverton focused on Aboriginal symbols, guiding children to explore lines and directions with their fine motor skills by creating marks in the sand. This activity not only taught them about Indigenous art but also helped develop their motor skills in a meaningful context.

At Nido Seven Hills, nursery children engaged in a blend of art, culture, and environmental lessons. These activities supported holistic development, integrating cultural learning with sensory and creative experiences.

Nido Hocking embraced this year’s NAIDOC Week theme, “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud,” through various art projects and mark-making activities. This focus allowed children to express themselves while learning about the importance of preserving and celebrating Indigenous culture.
